BDP - Mixed-Use Development - Liverpool, Paradise Street

Date: 30 Sep 2002

Liverpool Paradise Street Redevelopment masterplan by BDP for developer Grosvenor/Henderson, recognized as one of the most progressive in the UK, has been granted planning consent by Liverpool City Council following the news of the failure of the rival scheme at Public Inquiry earlier this month.

The BDP/Grosvenor/Henderson team was selected by Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Vision in March 2000 to bring forward a proposal for the Paradise Street Development Area after a very intensive and competitive selection process involving approximately 40 international developers.

The £700 million scheme covers 16.8 hectares (42 acres) of the city centre and the development will incorporate some 1 million square feet of new shops including individual units, two department stores and one other major store; plus integrated leisure facilities and over 300 residential units. The western quarter of the development focuses on a new public park framed by a landmark hotel, plus interchange and pavilions with dramatic views onto the Albert Dock and the Waterfront beyond.

BDP is among renowned international, UK and local architects selected to work on the project. The approach has been one of wholly respecting the grain and character of the existing urban fabric, building on the ‘Rope Walks’ initiatives where BDP have already developed the masterplan framework and has successfully completed the public realm works.

The scale of the development means a programme extending over several years with target completion by 2008.
