Date: 03 Dec 2002

Building Design Partnership (BDP) has been appointed by the Shetland Amenity Trust as lead consultant for the design of a new museum and archives .

The selection of BDP was by competitive tender, as required by EU procedures, and attracted UK-wide interest.

General Manager for the Trust, Jimmy Moncrieff, said that "BDP are one of the leading design practices in Europe and we are delighted that they will take the project forward to completion". Project manager, John Mackenzie, added that he was “very much looking forward to working in a partnership with BDP, the Trust management team and local interest groups to deliver this exciting new project”.

BDP will begin detailed design immediately in order that the project can meet the next main targets which are selection and appointment of a main building contractor by the middle of next year (2003), and commencing construction works of the new building in September 2003, with completion expected in Spring 2006.

• a discovery centre
